Katekyo Hitman Reborn!

Reborn!, known in Japan as Katekyō Hitman Reborn! (家庭教師ヒットマンREBORN! Katekyō Hittoman Ribōn!?, "Katekyō" being a portmanteau of Katei Kyōshi and translated as Home Tutor), is Japanese manga written and illustrated by Akira Amano. The plot revolves around the life of a young boy named Tsunayoshi Sawada, who finds out that he is next in line to become the boss of the most powerful Mafia organization called Vongola, the Vongola Family. As such, the Vongola's most powerful hitman, a gun-toting infant named Reborn, is sent to tutor "Tsuna" on how to become a respectable boss.
The individual manga chapters are serialized in Japan in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The individual chapters are collected and published in tankōbon volumes by Shueisha, with twenty-seven volumes released as of October 2, 2009. Viz Media licensed the series for an English languagerelease in North America, shortening the series name to Reborn!. An anime adaptation of the series by Artland aired on TV Tokyo between October 7, 2006 and September 25, 2010. Reborn! has become one of the best-selling Weekly Shōnen Jump manga with several of its volumes becoming top-sellers in Japan.Reviewers from the series praised its use of comedy as well as the designs used for the infants characters. They also mentioned that though it has become more violent since volume 8, it has turned into a better shōnen series, praising the storylines and the fights.

Plot

The Reborn! story revolves around a boy named Tsunayoshi "Tsuna" Sawada, who is chosen to become the Vongola Family's boss due to him being the great-great-great-great grandson of the first Vongola boss, who had moved to Japan from Italy during his time. He is told by Reborn that he will become the tenth (Italian decimo) Vongola boss. Also, the other candidates for the position of the head of the Vongola Family have died. For these reasons, Tsuna is the only remaining heir. As such, Timoteo a.k.a. "Vongola IX", the current head of the family, sends Reborn, an infant hitman from Italy, to train Tsuna. Tsuna then unwillingly undergoes training from Reborn. Reborn's main method of teaching Tsuna is the "Deathperate Bullet", which will make the person be "reborn" with a stronger self intent on fulfilling his dying will. Through his experiences, the initially clumsy and underachieving Tsuna unconsciously becomes stronger and more confident, which ultimately makes him better suited as the Vongola Family's boss despite continuing to reject his Mafia inheritance. He also starts making several friendships such as his crush Kyoko Sasagawa.
Tsuna goes through many predicaments in his progress of becoming the Vongola boss including fighting against escaped Mafia convicts posing as Kokuyo Junior High students. Later, The Varia, Vongola assassin squad, claim the right for their boss, Xanxus to be the true Vongola boss, and start a competition to decide it. To defeat the Varia, Reborn recruits most of Tsuna's schoolmates to become the Vongola guardians: Hayato Gokudera, a dynamite expert who wishes to be his right-hand man, Takeshi Yamamoto, a baseball player who thinks the Mafia is a game, Ryohei Sasagawa, the energetic captain of the school boxing club, and Kyoya Hibari, the deadly head prefect. Lambo, a weak infant assassin who came to kill Reborn, and Chrome Dokuro, a girl who has a mental and physical link with the criminal Mukuro Rokudo, joins them as well. Later, after defeating the Varia, Tsuna and his friends are transported to the future where they must face the Millefiore Family, who are annihilating the Vongola. They also find that all the Arcobaleno are dead except for Reborn from the past. As Tsuna and the Vongola Guardians from his time fight the Millefiore they learn that Shoichi Irie, a comrade of Tsuna's future self, was the one who sent them to the future as the future Tsuna said they were the only ones who can defeat the Millefiore leader Byakuran. It is later revealed that Byakuran has gained knowledge from parallel worlds and that he wants to obtain all the Mafia rings in order to obtain a power similar to omniscience.
After defeating Byakuran, Tsuna and company return to the present where they learn that Tsuna is to undergo the inheritance ceremony to officially become the 10th boss of the Vongola Family. However, the ceremony is attacked by the Shimon Family, who have sworn revenge on Vongola Primo for supposedly betraying the first Shimon boss. Armed with their new Vongola Rings, Tsuna confronts the Shimon family on a secluded island. The mafia family, Vindice, are involved in the battle and imprison the losers feud. After several battles, it is revealed, Daemon Spade, a member of the first generation of Vongola, was manipulating Shimon. He uses the conflict to take control of Mukuro's body and intends to conquer Vongola to remodel it to his image.

Characters
VONGOLA 10th GENERATION

Tsunayoshi Sawada

Tsunayoshi Sawada (沢田 綱吉/ツナ Sawada Tsunayoshi?), referred to as Tsuna, is the 14-year-old central character of the series. Because of his severely low self-esteem and lack of talent in any activity, Tsuna is known as "No-Good Tsuna" at his middle school Namimori. After being informed that he is the heir to the Vongola Family, due in part to him being the great-great-great grandson of the first Vongola boss as well as the untimely deaths of the other candidates for the position, he is trained into becoming a mob-boss by the infant Vongola hitmanReborn.[8] Tsuna is often shot by Reborn with a bullet that increases his physical abilities in order for him to fulfill his regrets. That state is what gradually makes others see him in a better light. For the most part of the series, Tsuna rejects his position and wants nothing to do with the Mafia, however, due to the results of various conflicts involving himself and his friends, his own power matures and he eventually starts embracing his destiny.[5] He is voiced by Yukari Kokubun in the anime.

Hayato Gokudera

Hayato Gokudera (獄寺 隼人 Gokudera Hayato?) is a 14-year-old transfer student from Italy who was placed in Tsuna's class. Gokudera is adynamite expert nicknamed "Smokin' Bomb Hayato" (スモーキン・ボム 隼人 Sumōkin Bomu Hayato?), or "Hurricane Bomb Hayato" in the anime. He keeps various explosives hidden on his body and uses those explosives liberally by lighting them with a cigarette (or several) held in his mouth. Initially, he comes to Japan in order to test Tsuna's strength, and after the latter risks his life to save Gokudera, he devotes himself entirely to Tsuna, having sworn to become his right-hand man. A hot-headed and short-tempered youth, he continuously gets into fights with several of the other characters, especially to those who try to get too close to Tsuna. Despite his personality, he is considered to be a genius, excelling in his academic studies. He is voiced by Hidekazu Ichinose in the anime.

Takeshi Yamamoto

Takeshi Yamamoto (山本 武 Yamamoto Takeshi?) is the 14-year-old popular baseball star of Namimori Middle School. Despite his carefree and outgoing personality, he initially has no confidence in doing anything other than baseball, even attempting to commit suicide after sustaining major injury to his arm. After Tsuna reassures him, the two become close friends, and Reborn tries to recruit him into the Vongola Family. He hardly takes anything seriously, and is usually oblivious to what is truly happening around him, often tricked by Reborn into participating in Mafia-related events because he thinks that they are all just playing a game. Though he becomes a dedicated and valuable member of Tsuna's family, growing to become a fighter who excels at swordsmanship, he still does not understand the full extent of the situation surrounding the Mafia. He is voiced by Suguru Inoue in the anime.
Lambo
Lambo (ランボ Ranbo?) is a cow suit-clad 5-year-old assassin from Italy affiliated with the Bovino ("Bovino" means "bovine" in Italian) Familia. He has a huge afro (which he stores a variety of objects in, such as snacks and weapons) with horns on the sides of his head. Despite being a hitman, he lacks the emotional maturity and discipline that Reborn has and is also very conceited as well as being a crybaby. In order to prove that he is worthy of becoming his own family's boss, he comes to Japan to kill Reborn, though he only proves that he is no match for the Vongola hitman. His main choice of weapons are hand grenades, and his future dream is to rule the world. He also possesses his family's Ten-Year Bazooka, which replaces his present self with another version of himself ten years into the future. The 15-year-old Lambo remains a crybaby, though his good looks make him more charming to others. His child self is voiced by Junko Takeuchi, while his older self is voiced by Kenjirō Tsuda in the anime.

Ryohei Sasagawa

Ryohei Sasagawa (笹川 了平 Sasagawa Ryōhei?) is the 15-year-old passionate member of the boxing club at Namimori Middle School. He constantly asks others he believe are strong to join his club, most notably Tsuna. In response, Reborn wants to recruit him into Tsuna's family. Every time he sees Tsuna and his family doing something strange, he gets fired up and always wants to be a part of it. Because of his energetic character, however, he does not understand the full extent of Tsuna's connection with the Mafia, but still does everything that he can to protect him and fights with as much spirit and confidence as the others. Proficient in hand-to-hand combat, his boxing training lead to his peak physical condition. He has a habit of always saying "to the extreme" as a single response or as an ending to his sentences. He is voiced by Hidenobu Kiuchi in the anime.

Kyoya Hibari

Kyoya Hibari (雲雀 恭弥 Hibari Kyōya?) is the leader of Namimori's Discipline Committee, or Prefects, whose members happen to be a group of delinquents loyal to him despite his lack of care for them. Though he mostly speaks in a calm tone, Hibari is an excellent but violent fighter himself, who uses a pair of tonfa as his primary weapons. Though he uses his status to harass others, he actually has great pride in his school and has a soft side toward animals and small children. However, students are not the only ones who fear him, teachers and other town residents know of him as well since he enforces his form of order throughout the entire town. He prefers to be alone, usually beating up those who crowd near him. Despite caring little about the events surrounding Tsuna and his friends, Hibari takes a great interest in Reborn after seeing his abilities, which is reciprocated by Reborn, who wants to recruit him as part of Tsuna's own family. He is voiced by Takashi Kondo in the anime.

Mukuro Rokudo

Mukuro Rokudo (六道 骸 Rokudō Mukuro?) is a 15-year-old Mafia criminal who escaped from an Italian prison, which held some of the most dangerous Mafia criminals, before he was to be executed. Not long after, he, along with his two subordinates, came to Japan, enrolled in Kokuyo Junior High, and started the Kokuyo Gang, which consists of heinous criminals whom have recently escaped from prison.Skilled in casting illusions as well as mind control, He attempts to take his revenge on the Mafia by taking over Tsuna's body and using him to wreak havoc. When his plan fails due to Tsuna's interference, he is once again imprisoned. However, later on in the series, after possessing the body of Chrome Dokuro, he takes on a more supportive role for the series' main characters, though still prefers not to associate with them.He is voiced by Toshinobu Iida in the anime.

Chrome Dokuro

Chrome Dokuro (クローム 髑髏 Kurōmu Dokuro?), originally named Nagi (?), is a 13-year-old Japanese girl who wears a Kokuyo school uniform. Mukuro Rokudo uses her as a vessel after he saved her life by creating illusionary organs for her when she lost her right eye and some of her organs in an accident. Chrome has been shown using two of Mukuro's six skills: creating illusions and summoning beasts that kill the enemy. The Japanese rōmaji of her name, Kurōmu Dokuro, is an anagram of Mukuro Rokudō.
Chrome is the named holder of the Mist Ring, and thus battles Mammon in the Vongola Tournament. When she is overwhelmed by Mammon's powers, Mukuro takes control and defeats him. After being transferred into the future, her physical condition takes a turn for the worse as several of her internal organs begin to fail. However, under Adult Hibari's instructions, she uses the power of her Vongola Ring to sustain her organs via her own illusions, thus avoiding any immediate danger.Afterwards she is given the Mist Vongola Box Weapon, the Demon Spade Evil Lens, which allows her to see through enemy illusions. She is voiced by Satomi Akesaka in the anime.

Arcobaleno

The Arcobaleno ("Rainbow" in Italian) is a group made up of the seven strongest infants, who each possess a pacifier that represent the different colors of the rainbow, with each color corresponding with their Dying Will Flame. Their Pacifiers will glow when a member is near another Arcobaleno. The Arcobaleno were transformed from adults into their infant and current forms; in Lal's flashback of the day it is revealed that they were all turned into babies and all seven of the Arcobaleno are shown at least once in their adult forms (Colonnello is not part of the original seven). Each of them has their own unique "curse" and specific abilities, as well as the ability to emit the Dying Will Flame throughout their entire body. They are mentioned to have sacrificed themselves in order to protect the Tri-Ni-Set (7³), or "ultimate power". The Arcobaleno are also mentioned to be "walking out of time" meaning that they cannot age or die due to old age. It is evident as Yuni calls Reborn "Uncle," meaning that Reborn has lived through the generation from Luce to Yuni.

Reborn

Reborn is the holder of the Sun Pacifier, also known as the world's strongest hitman. A titular character, Reborn is an infant hitman belonging to the Vongola Family. As the Ninth Vongola Boss' most trusted member, he becomes Tsuna's home tutor and trains him into becoming a mafia Boss. Since he is not an official Vongola Member and is only there to train Tsuna, he is not permitted to directly interfere with most of Tsuna's battles, though he is allowed to defend against attacks directed solely at him. His "partner" is a shape-shifting chameleon named Leon, who usually sits on Reborn's fedora (hat). The Bullets used by Reborn are created inside Leon. When Reborn's student is gradually progressing, Leon's tail falls off, his shape-shifting Abilities become unstable, and he is no longer able to create bullets. After Leon creates special items for the student, he returns to normal.
No matter how strong the emotion, Reborn always keeps a straight face and handles many situations as calmly as possible. Reborn often says "Ciaossu" (a mix of the Italian "ciao" and the Japanese "ossu", which is a casual male greeting). He randomly appears dressed as "another person" who no one except Dino and Tsuna recognize, and seems to see nothing unusual in any of his own behavior; more than often uses costumes when going undercover to view Tsuna's progress.
In the Future, Reborn is mentioned to be dead, and in order to avoid the Negative Seven Rays which Byakuran unleashed in the atmosphere in order to slowly kill the Arcobaleno, the past Reborn remains in Tsuna's underground base and wears a special suit. Reborn's special attack is called Chaos Shot, in which he fires a Sun Attribute beam out of Leon in pistol form. The beam can split up into several other beams at Reborn's command, and can hit multiple enemies or hit the same enemy from different directions. His Trial was the ability to fight for the Family as a Boss. In the anime, his infant form is voiced by Neeko and his adult form is voiced by Ken Narita.

Verde

Verde is the holder of the Lightning Pacifier, he is also the smartest Arcobaleno in Intelligence, briefly mentioned by Reborn as the person who sent assassins to kill Tsuna. Apparently, Verde is knowledgeable about camouflage and invisibility, so he gives his subordinates suits that can make them invisible to everyone but children. Verde believes that he should be able to see his subordinates in case they ever try to sneak up on him in order to kill him. His Animal is a Crocodile/Alligator. His special Attack is called Electrico Thunder which calls down powerful paralyzing Lightning, but it didn't affect Lambo who has a special physical make-up that is immune to Lightning. His Trial is a test of Intuition. Verde is also one of the three scientists who develops the Box Weapons in the Future and some in the Past (as shown in the Arcobaleno Trials), where he is said to be dead like the other Arcobaleno. Reborn and Lal Mirch note that while Verde is an Arcobaleno, he is "not one of us," and "you can never tell what he is thinking." Verde appears to be an extremely mysterious person who is devoted to further progressing his experiments; according to Reborn, he'd do anything for them.

Colonnello

Colonnello is the holder of the Rain Pacifier. Although he is not part of the original seven Arcobaleno, he attained the Rain Pacifier after attempting to take Lal's place on the day that they were all turned into babies. He is in charge of the training ground behind Mafia Land and was a former member of the COMSUBIN, thus he is an expert when it comes to using heavy artillery, using an anti-tank Rifle as his primary weapon. His Animal is the hawk on top of his head (in Infant form) which helps him fly to distant places. Colonnello also has a rivalry with Reborn and vice-versa, but despite this, he shares many traits with Reborn, like being a merciless tutor, suddenly taking naps, and having a sharp tongue. He becomes Ryohei's home tutor during the Vongola Ring Conflict, and in the Future, he is said to have died trying to protect Viper (Mammon). He is voiced by Daisuke Nakamura in the anime. Colonnello's special attack is called Maximum Burst. It shoots out a Rain Attribute Flame in the shape of a hawk with strong attack force. His Trial is Combat Ability.

Skull

Skull is the holder of the Cloud Pacifier. Head of the Combat forces for the Calcassa Family, Skull wears a full leather outfit and a motorcycle helmet, which is copied by all his subordinates. His Animal is a giant armored octopus whose tentacles follow his hand and finger's movements. He is implied to be not as powerful an infant as Reborn and Colonnello, whom he calls his senpai's, and is looked down upon and ridiculed by the two. Reborn considers Skull as an errand boy and Skull, to his dismay, does not deny the fact that the only person he was an errand boy for was Reborn. He is said to have died in the Future, with the rest of the Arcobaleno. He is voiced by Tetsuya Yanagihara in the anime. Skull's special Ability is called Armored Muscled Body. When Skull uses this Ability, he becomes a superhuman by having very large muscles and he is impervious to pain or damage. His Trial is Charisma.

Viper

Viper is the holder of the Mist Pacifier. He is a member of the elite assassination team, the Varia, under the nameMammon|マーモン|Māmon}}. Known as the Arcobaleno's best spellcaster and Illusionist, Viper has the Ability to cast powerful Illusions, as well as being able to locate any person by sneezing into a piece of paper (he carries a roll of paper with him); the spit or mucus that sticks to the paper shows a map leading to where the desired person is. His Animal is a black frog named Fantasma that lies on top of his head. By turning into a yellow salamander and biting its tail, which forms into a "halo" above him, more properly called an "Ouroboros", a snake biting its own tail, Fantasma can give Mammon the Ability to fly in combat. Viper's special Ability is called Viper Mirage which allows him to create powerful Illusions. His Trial is Adaptability. He claims to have been trying to break the Arcobaleno curse, and had sealed his Pacifier so that other Arcobaleno could not sense him. He has also created a Chain that conceals the power of the Arcobaleno Pacifiers, as well as the Vongola Rings. The chain is known as the Mammon Chain, but is replaced, at least by the Vongola's, by the cap that conceals the rings powers the same way as the chains. During the Ring Conflict, he defeats Chrome Dokuro, however, he is defeated by Mukuro once the latter takes possession of Chrome's body. He is said to be dead in the Future, with Gingerbread claiming that he took his own life after feeling there was no other way out. But now he has been revived by Yuni after she and Gamma sacrificed them to revive the Arcobaleno. He is voiced by Rumi Shishido in the anime.

Luce

Luce is the holder of the Sky Pacifier. Her Animal is a Squirrel. In the anime, Reborn says that she has a 'mysterious power of insight'. She is shown to be pregnant. It is evident that the Pacifier can be passed down from the original Arcobaleno to the next generations as Luce had passed it down to Aria who in turn passed it down to Yuni; this progression of inheritance largely contrasts with that of other families as Sky Arcobaleno have short lifespans. Aria held the Sky pacifier in the short time between Luce's and her deaths. She appeared to have had a close relationship with Gamma. In the manga, Reborn specifically states that Yuni is the Arcobaleno Boss, even though she is not an Arcobaleno herself.
In the Arcobaleno Trials Arc, Luce's daughter and Yuni's mother, Aria, was the one to administer of the Sky Trial. Aria's Trial is the Trial of Tolerance.

Fon

Fon is the holder of the Storm Pacifier and is the Master of I-Pin. He originates from China, and is also an experienced martial artist. According to Reborn, he is so strong that he has been champion of the top martial arts tournament in China for three years running. He also resembles Kyoya Hibari in terms of looks. His Animal is a Monkey, most likely a Bald Uakari. His special Attack is called Exploding Lotus Kempo which allows him to blast a Chinese dragon made of Storm Flames at his opponent. His Trial is Leadership.
